Kia, originally known as Kyungsung Precision Industry, was established in 1944. It started by producing steel tubes and bicycles but later shifted its focus to manufacturing motorcycles, trucks, and cars. In 1952, it officially changed its name to Kia. However, due to the Asian financial crisis in 1997, Kia went bankrupt and was acquired by Hyundai Motor Company. This led to the formation of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group. Currently, Kia is the second largest automobile manufacturer in South Korea and has its headquarters in Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul.
On April 4, 2007, Truong Hai Group and Kia Motors Corporation (South Korea) signed a cooperation agreement to enter the Vietnamese market. This partnership led to the establishment of Truong Hai Kia (Thaco Kia). The Kia passenger car production and assembly plant was built in the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone (Quang Nam) in June 2007.
