In addition to Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Vietnamese tycoons are increasingly exploring vintage sports cars like Porsche and Ford. One model in particular is the Porsche 930 Turbo, which is owned by at least 5 well-known individuals.

A Saigon tycoon currently owns the only Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet in Vietnam. While there is only one convertible version, there are 4 different hardtop versions in the country. One of the hardtop versions is a part of Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu’s extensive car collection.

The Porsche 930 Turbo, produced by the German brand between 1975 and 1989, is a historic car. It is considered to be the turbocharged variant of the iconic 911 model. Porsche began developing turbocharging technology for the 930, which was initially used to meet regulations for street-legal racing cars.

The first generation of the Porsche 930 Turbo (1975-1977) saw a production of 2,819 units, but the upgraded version (1978-1989) increased the production number to a staggering 18,770 units. The Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet owned by the Saigon tycoon is part of this upgraded version and is over 30 years old.

The car’s exterior is painted in glossy black, and it is uncertain whether this is a repaint or the original color from the German factory. This specific color has never been seen on the hardtop versions of the Porsche 930 Turbo in Vietnam. The lighting system features the trademark “frog eye” design, utilizing halogen bulbs.

The car’s dimensions, including length, width, and height, are 4,291mm x 1,775mm x 1,311mm, with a wheelbase of 2,272mm. Depending on the model, the car’s weight ranges from 1,210kg to 1,379kg, which is relatively light for a high-performance sports car. The car is equipped with the legendary Fuchs Clover Leaf 5-spoke wheels, a trademark of Porsche.

The rear end of the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet exhibits a simple design language commonly seen in other German cars, with dual exhaust pipes directed towards the driver’s side. The rear light cluster stands out with its elongated reflector strip, concealing the Porsche logo.

A distinctive feature of Porsche 930 Turbo models is the prominent rear spoiler. Some people refer to this spoiler as a “whale tail,” but according to Porsche enthusiasts from that era, only the 930 Turbo models produced before 1978 had the “whale tail” design. The upgraded version switched to a flatter rear spoiler.

The heart of this unique Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet in Vietnam is its 3.3-liter turbocharged engine, which is 0.3 liters larger than its predecessor. It generates a maximum output of 296 horsepower and 412 Nm of torque, representing an increase of 40 horsepower and 83 Nm compared to the previous 930 Turbo engine. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 257 km/h.

As a brand renowned for delivering an impressive driving experience, this Porsche 930 Turbo is no exception. However, the car is known to be challenging to drive due to its short wheelbase and rear-engine placement. With this vintage sports car, there is still a tendency for oversteer and turbo lag, as the 930 Turbo was one of the first models in the world to feature a turbocharged engine. Even after decades, it remains highly sought after by car enthusiasts worldwide.

On the international market, the prices of hardtop or convertible Porsche 930 Turbos range from 100,000 to 190,000 USD depending on their condition. If brought to Vietnam, their value would be no less than 20 billion VND. However, imports of used cars older than 5 years are extremely challenging due to regulations.
