Mitsubishi plans to unveil an “electricity-hybrid MPV crossover” concept car at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, which is set to replace the Delica D:5 model. The automaker has released an image of the rear section of the car, showcasing its boxy design. The rear window features T-shaped LED taillights and a vibrant Mitsubishi logo. Although the lower part of the car remains concealed, a roof storage box can be seen, providing extra space for cargo or a small tent. Additionally, a mount is visible on the A-pillar, suggesting the integration of a rearview camera in place of a traditional mirror.
Mitsubishi also suggests that this concept car will combine the on-road capabilities of an SUV with the comfort and user-friendliness of an MPV, in an effort to promote a carbon-neutral society. The electrified hybrid drivetrain is expected to deliver a versatile range of travel and driving performance suitable for various adventures. The car is likely to feature a plug-in hybrid configuration, allowing for the flexible switching of driving modes as needed. Mitsubishi has confirmed that the concept car will be equipped with a four-wheel-drive electric drivetrain, ensuring excellent off-road capability and a raised ground clearance, complemented by large-diameter tires.
While Mitsubishi has not announced any specific production plans for this electrified hybrid MPV crossover concept, the timing and nature of the launch have led many to believe that it could serve as the successor to the Delica D:5. The current fifth-generation Delica D:5 has remained largely unchanged since 2007, with only a minor update in 2018, making it an opportune moment for a completely new design.
In addition to the aforementioned concept car, Mitsubishi’s lineup at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 will include the new Triton, a race replica based on the Asia Cross Country Rally version, as well as the support vehicle Delica D:5 and other commercial models such as the Outlander PHEV, Delica D:5, Eclipse Cross PHEV, Delica Mini, and eK X EV.
