Porsche is planning to extend the lifespan of the Macan model with an internal combustion engine for a few more years, alongside the upcoming Macan EV. However, due to stricter new cybersecurity regulations from the European Union (EU), the German automaker will reportedly be forced to stop production of the ICE version in 2024, making it impossible to continue selling in the European market.

The first generation of the Porsche Macan was introduced in 2014. Despite two facelifts in 2016 and 2021, this model still complies with the EU’s cybersecurity regulations that will be effective from July 1, 2024. It remains the best-selling Porsche model in Europe. However, the change in regulations presents challenges that automakers find difficult to overcome, resulting in a significant decrease in profits.

A spokesperson from Porsche confirmed to Automobilewoche magazine that the Macan will cease sales in the EU in the spring of 2024. The spokesperson explained that the necessary upgrades to comply with the new regulations would be complex and costly.

The German sports car brand’s spokesperson stated, “Implementing this directive not only requires technical adjustments, such as in control units, but also fundamentally changes processes in the development phase. For example, the cybersecurity management system will have to be developed and certified as safe for the future.”

The new cybersecurity regulations imposed by the EU aim to protect the electronic structure of vehicles from potential hacker attacks. This change has also affected many other models from the VW Group, including the VW e-Up, Audi TT, and Audi R8, most of which have been discontinued. Furthermore, the VW Transporter T6.1 van had to be replaced and now utilizes components sourced from the Ford Transit.

Although the Macan with internal combustion engines will no longer be available in the EU market, Porsche will continue to sell these models in other markets worldwide, including North America and Asia, at least until 2026 when the new generation is introduced or stricter emissions regulations come into play in numerous countries.

In Vietnam, the Porsche Macan is also a popular model from the German brand, with prices ranging from 3.35 to 5.34 billion VND and including four different variants. While its price range is higher than its competitors in the same segment, it still appeals to Porsche enthusiasts.

If sales in Europe are discontinued, the German automaker may consider shifting production or assembly of the Macan to plants outside of Europe, including Malaysia. Currently, Porsche in Vietnam is still imported from Europe.
