Suzuki: Jimny and Swift models not intended for collaboration with Toyota

Toyota has expressed interest in having its own version of Suzuki’s iconic models, the Jimny and Swift. However, Suzuki has declined the proposal, stating that these models are essential to the company’s DNA and should not be shared. Selling these models with the Toyota emblem could diminish their iconic status and the brand’s reputation. A Suzuki insider revealed, “Toyota wants to badge the Jimny and Swift but we have politely declined.”

While sharing the Jimny with Toyota could potentially boost Suzuki’s sales, the company has no intention of compromising the integrity of these models just for higher sales figures. Suzuki India sold only 15,476 units of the Jimny from June to November 2023, with sales dropping to just 1,020 units in November. However, an internal source emphasized that these models are the core of Suzuki’s brand identity and should not be shared.

“This is akin to asking Toyota to let us use the Land Cruiser badge. These models are the core of our brand’s purpose, not for sharing, and both companies respect that,” said the source.

Similarly, the Swift is also not available for sharing. However, it is understandable why Toyota, a company known for selling Suzuki’s premium products under its own brand, would be interested in acquiring the popular and iconic Swift.

The partnership between Toyota and Suzuki in India has been mutually beneficial, as sharing models and platforms has allowed both companies to capitalize on economies of scale and achieve steady sales growth. This collaboration has resulted in a larger investment portfolio for both Japanese carmakers, offering a range of products at different price points.
