Following a one-week suspension, the Vietnam Joint Stock Auction Company held an online auction for car license plates on the morning of December 16, 2023. The auction featured hundreds of plates, including many with consecutive and auspicious numbers.
Of particular note, during the opening auction session on December 16, 2023, several license plates with consecutive nines received high bids. The most sought-after plates were 99A-699.99 and 17A-399.99, both of which sold for over 1 billion VND. These plates generated significant anticipation leading up to the auction.
Among the plates, the 17A-399.99 was sold to a wealthy individual for precisely 1 billion VND. According to the auction rules, the winning bidder must pay the full amount within 15 days of the result announcement. This payment will be deducted from the deposit (40 million VND), but does not include the vehicle registration fee, resulting in a remaining payment of 960 million VND.
As for the elegant 99A-699.99 plate, it fetched a staggering 1.46 billion VND, requiring the highest bidder to pay an additional 1.42 billion VND to secure ownership.
The 99A-699.99 license plate holds great value because when the number 6 is flipped, it becomes a 9, resulting in a total of 7 number 9s. This pattern, known as “th?t trùng c?u” in Vietnamese, is considered quite auspicious. Even with only 6 number 9s, like in the case of the 99A-699.99 plate, it is still considered beautiful and referred to as “l?c c?u” in Vietnamese.
