Nowadays, automobiles are equipped with a plethora of modern features and an exceptional safety technology package. Consequently, this has led to a rise in production costs, prices, and repair expenses associated with cars.
Recently, AAA, a non-profit organization based in Washington DC, conducted a study and put forward a hypothesis that in the event of an accident, users would incur substantial expenses to repair faulty components.
Depending on the type of vehicle, maintenance costs can vary. However, AAA’s research reveals that approximately 37.6% of the costs are attributed to repairing and adjusting sensors and cameras utilized for advanced safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, rear parking sensors, and emergency automatic braking, among others.
The director of AAA’s automotive engineering department, Greg Brannon, stated, “Vehicles equipped with sophisticated safety systems are gaining popularity, especially since the NHTSA (USA) proposed mandatory automatic emergency braking regulations earlier this year. Nevertheless, users must be vigilant and ascertain the repair costs in case these technologies malfunction.”
To provide a more accurate assessment, AAA conducted an analysis on three vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance systems. AAA found that, on average, repairing radar sensors would result in additional expenses of $500 – $1,300 (approximately 12 – 31 million VND).
If repairing ultrasonic sensors used for parking assistance, the cost would range from $300 – $1,000 (approximately 7.2 – 24 million VND).
In the scenario of a malfunctioning windshield camera system, the repair would amount to approximately $900 – $1,200 (equivalent to 22 – 24 million VND).
When repairing the sensor and camera system on the rearview mirror, users may be required to pay between $740 – $1,600 (equivalent to 18 to 38 million VND). This cost even constitutes 70.8% of the expense to replace a mirror.
Despite the potential difficulties and expenses associated with repairing these safety devices, the benefits they provide during vehicle operation are undeniable.
