After surpassing Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD (Build Your Dreams) is expanding its ambitions to dominate the electric vehicle market, with the Chinese automaker preparing to unveil a midsize pickup truck (yet to be named) to compete against Ford’s Ranger and Toyota’s Hilux.
With patent drawings and images taken during testing, the electric pickup truck is being developed and tested in Australia. Wolfgang Egger, renowned for his work with Audi, is reportedly responsible for the design of BYD’s midsize pickup truck, with a sturdy yet refined appearance.
The prominent front grille features a large “BYD” logo, rugged fender flares, and dual headlights. Interestingly, the truck features daytime running lights (DRL) inspired by the F-150 Lightning, contributing to an impressive exterior. The black A-pillars and raised roofline add to its appeal, while the slanted rear taillights and midsize cargo bed complete the look.
The BYD truck promises a practical and tech-rich experience. Key features include a head-up display (HUD) developed by Huawei, a standalone 10.25-inch LCD digital gauge cluster, and a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The air vents feature red accents, with zone adjustment buttons. Other notable items include a passenger-side dashboard shelf, red stitching on the steering wheel, and seating for five.
BYD claims their DM-i Electric (Dual-Motor Intelligence) hybrid technology is the world’s first exclusive technology. Though details are scarce, this improved system is said to use a turbocharged 1.5L engine and two electric motors, with a total system output of around 490 horsepower. They also express optimism about a combined range of up to 1200 km with full fuel and battery. An independent rear suspension and 4WD drivetrain are believed to come standard, though a rear-wheel-drive option is possible.
While not immediately available at launch, a fully electric variant is being developed to showcase BYD’s commitment to diverse powertrain options. In the highly competitive pickup truck segment, the BYD truck will have to contend with fierce competition from established names such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, and Mitsubishi Triton, alongside contenders like the Radar RD6, LDV T60, and Geely’s GWM Cannon.
An official reveal is set to happen in the coming months, with sales expected to commence in China, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe later this year.
