Cummins will have to pay approximately $2 billion (49 trillion VND) as part of a settlement with the US Department of Justice and the state of California, following allegations of emissions cheating.
The US Department of Justice has stated that Cummins installed defeat devices in its vehicles to bypass or disable the emission control system, including exhaust gas sensors and onboard computers.
Cummins has been found to have installed these devices in 630,000 pickup truck engines from RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 models manufactured between 2013 and 2019. The company is also accused of installing auxiliary emission control devices in 330,000 pickup truck engines from RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 models manufactured between 2019 and 2023.
Cummins estimates that it will incur a total cost of almost $2.04 billion (49.99 trillion VND) to address all issues related to this incident, affecting nearly one million engines. The company expects to pay $1.93 billion (47.29 trillion VND) within the first half of 2024.
Stellantis, the owner of the RAM pickup truck brand, has chosen not to comment on this incident. Cummins has stated that approximately 960,000 affected vehicles will be recalled, and the emission control software will be updated. Reuters has reported that Cummins has already paid $59 million (1.44 trillion VND) in fees for the vehicle recall.
In addition to the significant settlement amount, RAM will also make software adjustments to ensure compliance with emission regulations for the affected models produced between 2013 and 2019.
