D-segment Sedan Sales in December 2023 (unit: cars)

Toyota Camry: 245 cars

In December 2023, Vietnamese customers bought 245 Toyota Camry cars, an 84% increase compared to the previous month. As a result, the Japanese car model remains the best-selling model in the D-segment sedan.

This figure has increased the cumulative sales for the whole year of 2023 of the Toyota Camry to 2,429 cars, the highest in the segment. Compared to 2022, the sales of this model decreased by 45.6%. One of the reasons for this situation is partly due to the slowdown in car purchasing power in the whole market last year. Besides, Vietnamese buyers are no longer as passionate about the D-segment sedan as before. This is a common trend in many markets around the world, not just in Vietnam.

Toyota Camry

Toyota Camry in Vietnam currently has 4 versions and prices ranging from 1,105 – 1,495 billion VND. The car has competitive advantages such as a reputable brand, elegant design, full range of modern features, and complete safety equipment, as well as a variety of engine choices.

Specifically, Toyota Camry in Vietnam has up to 3 engine options, the most in the segment. First is the 2.0L gasoline engine with a maximum power of 170 horsepower and a maximum torque of 206 Nm, accompanied by a CVT automatic transmission. Next is the 2.5L gasoline engine, providing a maximum power of 207 horsepower and a maximum torque of 250 Nm, combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Finally, there is the hybrid powertrain with a gasoline engine, electric motor, and CVT automatic transmission, generating a total power of 264 horsepower.

In addition, Toyota Camry also has the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 active safety technology package with modern features such as lane keeping assist, emergency automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and intelligent headlights. The premium versions of the car also have 8 sensors and a 360-degree camera.

Kia K5: 115 cars

In the past few months, the Korean car model Kia K5 has consistently outsold its competitor Mazda6, and the same applies to December 2023. In the past month, this model achieved sales of 115 cars, a 12.7% growth, and ranked 2nd in the segment.

Meanwhile, the cumulative sales of Kia K5 in 2023 reached only 1,044 cars, a relatively modest number. Compared to 2022, the sales of this Korean model decreased by 38.9%, following the general trend of the whole market.

Kia K5

Compared to the Toyota Camry, the Kia K5 has the advantage in terms of price, ranging from 859 – 999 million VND. Additionally, as it is a domestically assembled car, the Kia K5 also receives 50% reduction in the registration fee for the last 6 months of 2023 from the Government.

The Kia K5 carries a youthful and sporty design along with many features such as LED headlights, power-adjustable driver’s seat with position memory, power-adjustable passenger seat, head-up display (HUD), 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bose 12-speaker sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, remote engine start, and wireless phone charging.

Under the hood of this Korean car are 2 engine options. The first is the 2.0L Nu MPI engine, delivering a maximum power of 150 horsepower and a maximum torque of 192 Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Next is the 2.5L Theta-III GDi engine, equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, producing a maximum power of 191 horsepower and a maximum torque of 246 Nm. The car’s drivetrain is front-wheel drive.

Mazda6: 88 cars

Compared to the above two competitors, the Mazda6 has a more modest growth rate, with only a 3.5% increase to 88 cars in December 2023. Therefore, the ranking of this Japanese car model in the D-segment sedan remains unchanged, still in the 3rd position.

In the whole year of 2023, the sales of Mazda6 reached just over Kia K5, with 1,094 cars. At the same time, this number also decreased by 15.1% compared to 2022.

Mazda6

Mazda6 is currently the cheapest model in the segment with prices ranging from 779 – 914 million VND. Besides, the car also enjoys a 50% reduction in the registration fee by the Government in the second half of 2023. However, these factors have not been able to help the Mazda model improve its sales and surpass the Toyota Camry.

In addition to its sleek design, the Mazda6 also has highlights in safety features such as blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive LED headlights, lane departure warning, and 6 airbags. If equipped with the upgraded i-Activsense package, the car will have additional features such as radar cruise control, collision warning, front/rear smart braking, lane-keeping assist, driver attention alert, and smart brake support (SBS).

Under the hood of the Mazda6 are 2 gasoline engines, SkyActiv-G 2.0, and SkyActiv-G 2.5, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0L engine provides a maximum power of 154 horsepower and a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The corresponding figures for the 2.5L engine are 188 horsepower and 252 Nm.

Honda Accord: 7 cars

It is not surprising that the Honda Accord occupies the last position in the D-segment sedan. In the past month, this car model sold only 7 cars, a 30% decrease. This is also the only model in the segment that experienced a decrease in sales.

The cumulative sales of Honda Accord for the whole year are extremely low, reaching only 58 cars. With this sales figure, the Honda Accord firmly secures a place in the top 10 least sold cars in Vietnam in 2023.

Honda Accord

Behind the unsatisfactory sales figures of the Honda Accord are some factors such as its high price, up to 1,319 billion VND, and having only 1 version. As an imported car, the Honda Accord also does not enjoy the reduced registration fee policy from the Government.

In return, the Honda Accord has a spacious interior and is highly praised for its driving experience in the segment. The car is equipped with a 4-cylinder, turbocharged, 1.5L gasoline engine, producing a maximum power of 188 horsepower and a maximum torque of 260 Nm. Accompanying the engine is a CVT continuously variable transmission with Eco and Sport driving modes.

In addition, there are active safety features similar to the competitors such as collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control including low-speed range, automatic adaptive headlights, lane-keep assist with lane departure warning, and lane-keeping support among others.
