The Ford Ranger pickup truck is set to receive a hybrid drivetrain consisting of a petrol engine and an electric motor within the next year, according to Australian magazine Drive. The hybrid engine is rumored to debut in the 2024 model. Ford Australia has not confirmed or denied the report.
Powering the hybrid Ranger will be a 2.3L petrol engine paired with one or two electric motors. The vehicle will also feature a charging port for convenient charging. The 2.3L engine, borrowed from the Volkswagen Amarok, is expected to produce 302 horsepower and 452 Nm of torque.
The possibility exists that the Ford Ranger PHEV for the Australian market will be manufactured at the Silverton plant in South Africa, which is where the Volkswagen Amarok is currently produced. The Silverton plant is responsible for manufacturing pickup trucks, SUVs, and commercial vehicles for both the African and European markets.
However, it is unlikely that the hybrid Ford Ranger will be officially sold in Vietnam, as diesel engine-powered pickup trucks are more popular in Vietnam and neighboring countries.
In Vietnam, the Ford Ranger is available in six different variants: XL, XLS, XLT, Sport, Wildtrak, and Raptor. The Ranger has consistently been the best-selling pickup truck in Vietnam for several months. From January to April of this year, Ford Vietnam has sold a total of 5,083 Ranger vehicles.
