Honda City dominates the competition, surpassing Toyota Vios and Hyundai Accent as the ultimate champion.

The B-segment sedan sales in May exhibited indications of expansion despite the sluggish performance of the car category. Nevertheless, Toyota Vios, Hyundai Accent, and Honda City witnessed a substantial decrease.

Based on statistics from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) and TC Group, the total car sales in May continued to decrease with only 20,726 units sold, an 8% drop compared to the previous month. This sales performance is 53% lower compared to the same period last year.

The B-segment sedan category has been facing a consistent decline in sales due to low purchasing power in the market. Popular models like Toyota Vios and Hyundai Accent have not shown any signs of improvement.

Honda City maintains its leading position

Despite the challenging market conditions, Honda City achieved unexpected sales of 1,035 units in May, representing an 8.9% decrease compared to the previous month. With consistent monthly sales of over 1,000 units, Honda City leads the B-segment sedan category and is among the top 10 best-selling cars in the market for May.

In the first 5 months of this year, Honda Vietnam delivered 4,623 units of the City sedan, making it the second best-selling B-segment sedan in the market, just behind the Hyundai Accent.

The stable sales performance of the Honda City can be attributed to the promotions and incentives offered by the automaker and its dealerships in the early months of this year.

Specifically, the Honda City is still offered with 100% registration fee exemption at dealerships. According to a sales consultant at a Honda dealership in Ho Chi Minh City, customers who purchase a Honda City in June will continue to receive 100% registration fee exemption and a genuine accessory package worth 50 million VND.

“The Honda City is still being offered with 100% registration fee exemption and a complimentary one-year comprehensive insurance or a genuine accessory package,” added the sales consultant.

The current listed price for the Honda City ranges from 529 to 599 million VND for the 3 available versions in the Vietnamese market.

Hyundai Accent sales nearly double that of Toyota Vios

At the end of the second quarter, both Hyundai Accent and Toyota Vios experienced a sharp decrease in sales, despite the implementation of various promotions by dealerships to boost sales. Sales of the Hyundai Accent dropped from 1,050 units in April to only 920 units in May, a decrease of 12.3%. After 5 months, Hyundai Accent leads the B-segment sedan category with 5,913 units sold.

In June, Hyundai Accent is currently being offered with a 50% registration fee exemption along with valuable gifts such as one-year comprehensive insurance or a dashcam.

Meanwhile, Toyota Vios recorded sales of 586 units in May, a 15.6% decrease compared to the previous month. This sedan model is also offering incentives to compete with other rivals in the segment.

Specifically, Toyota Vietnam has announced a 50% registration fee exemption program for Toyota Vios G and E, for both MT and CVT versions, for all customers who place orders and complete payment before June 30.

When discussing with a sales consultant at a Toyota dealership in Ho Chi Minh City, the consultant mentioned that the B-segment sedan is currently being offered with a 10-20 million VND discount. Customers purchasing Toyota Vios can enjoy the combination of 2 promotional programs, resulting in a lower price.

Slow-selling models experience simultaneous growth

In contrast to popular car models, several low-demand sedans experienced an increase in sales in May. Specifically, both Mazda2 and Mitsubishi Attrage sold more units compared to April. The sales of these 2 sedan models reached 386 units and 319 units, respectively. Thaco Vietnam also sold 90 Kia Soluto cars, an increase of 8 units compared to the previous month.

Currently, Mazda2, Kia Soluto, and Mitsubishi Attrage are all offering a 50% registration fee exemption in June, with a total discount value of up to 40 million VND.

According to our journalist’s survey, some Mitsubishi dealerships are willing to offer additional discounts of 10-20 million VND to clear out the 2022 VIN batch of Mitsubishi Attrage cars.

Suzuki Ciaz, after a month of sales growth, returned to an average of 3 units per month. With a total sales of only 14 units after 5 months, Suzuki Ciaz continues to lag behind in terms of sales in the entire segment, and is part of the slowest-selling car group in the market in May.

Compared to other competitors in the same segment, Suzuki Ciaz has lower incentives, and sales have not shown promising signs. An employee at a Suzuki dealership in Hanoi stated that customers who purchase Suzuki Ciaz will receive a package of comprehensive car insurance worth 10 million VND and a direct discount of 5 million VND. However, this is a stock clearance program only applicable to the 2022 VIN batch.
