A Korean automaker has recently unveiled a groundbreaking technology known as Active Air Skirt (AAS) that enhances the speed and range of vehicles.
The AAS system utilizes an air-splitting device located underneath the car to minimize air turbulence caused by the wheels. It automatically activates when the car exceeds a speed of 80 km/h and retracts when the speed drops below 70 km/h. When tested on the Genesis GV60, the AAS reduced the drag coefficient (Cd) to 0.008, resulting in a 2.8% improvement in aerodynamics.
Moreover, Hyundai claims that AAS is also beneficial at higher speeds, as it increases downforce and operates effectively above 200 km/h. Traditionally, racing cars have utilized various aerodynamic features to reduce turbulence in front of the wheels. However, Hyundai plans to implement AAS in specific vehicle types.
Sun Hyung Cho, Vice Chairman and Head of the Vehicle Development Group at Hyundai, stated, “This technology is expected to have a significant impact on models such as SUVs, which often face challenges in enhancing their aerodynamic performance. We will continue our efforts to improve the driving performance and stability of electric vehicles through aerodynamic advancements.”
In the electric vehicle market, maximizing range is crucial for all manufacturers. AAS technology aligns with Hyundai’s commitment to incorporating innovative technologies in their electric vehicles. The Ioniq 6, for example, integrates active air vents, wheel covers, wheel gap reducers, and a rear spoiler to optimize its drag coefficient.
The AAS system is still in development, with Hyundai having filed for patents in South Korea and the United States. The company aims to consider mass production after extensive durability and performance testing.
