Zeekr – a brand owned by Geely – has unveiled its self-developed lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery called Golden Brick as part of the Zeekr Power Day event.

Zeekr claims that this new type of battery has undergone rigorous testing. The Golden Brick battery pack, weighing 710 kg, was subjected to extreme conditions such as being heated to a temperature of 1,000 degrees Celsius, immersed in saltwater for 48 hours, and frozen at -45 degrees Celsius for 8 hours.

Despite these harsh tests, the battery still functions normally and is extremely safe.

Zeekr didn’t stop there and further tested the battery pack by placing it under a 22-ton truck. Additionally, the battery pack was dropped from a height of 10 meters to the ground. Throughout these tests, the battery pack maintained its normal functionality without any signs of explosion or smoke.

The Golden Brick is the world’s first commercially available LFP battery with an optimized capacity of over 80%.

Currently, Zeekr has only installed this battery pack on the 007 sedan model. The launch of this model is scheduled for December 27.

The Zeekr battery pack boasts a volume utilization rate of up to 83.7% due to its compact “sandwich structure” featuring optimized, ultra-thin partitions, and an integrated tray design.

For comparison, CATL introduced the Qilin battery in June 2022, which utilized NMC and CTP chemistry (cell-to-pack technology) and achieved a record volume utilization rate of 72% with an energy density of 255 Wh/kg. In 2019, CATL only achieved 55% utilization. Currently, a volume utilization rate of around 66% is considered standard for LFP batteries in some technologies.

The Golden Brick battery has a charging power of 500 kW and a maximum charging speed of 4.5C. It can charge from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes, providing a range of 500km. At -10°C, the fast charging speed increases by 25%. The battery also has the capability to deliver short-term power of 16C in just 3 seconds. The battery casing is covered with a yellow-colored high-voltage insulation film, increasing resistance to 27%. The entire pack is also waterproof, achieving an IPX8 rating.

During the Zeekr Power Day event, the Chinese automaker also announced plans for the installation of charging systems. Zeekr aims to install an additional 1,000 charging stations by 2024 and 10,000 by the end of 2026. Currently, Zeekr already operates 401 fast-charging stations in China with 2,261 charging ports.
