In November 2021, production of the Honda Odyssey large-sized MPV was temporarily stopped in Japan. However, by early December 2023, the model made a comeback in the domestic market. This time, the Honda Odyssey is being fully imported from China instead of being assembled in Japan.
Unfortunately, the return of the Honda Odyssey has not been well-received by Japanese customers. Several dealers in Japan have reported that they have not signed any contracts to purchase the Honda Odyssey thus far. Additionally, customers have not shown interest in scheduling test drives or receiving catalogs for this model.
Dealers have been struggling to sell the large-sized MPV from the Honda brand. As a result, they have been actively reaching out to customers who already own a Honda vehicle to see if they would be interested in purchasing the Odyssey.
The dealers have also provided some reasons as to why domestic customers are ignoring the new Honda Odyssey. Firstly, there are concerns about the quality of the car since it is fully imported from China. Secondly, the Honda Odyssey only offers one engine option, which is the hybrid e:HEV drivetrain. Thirdly, this large-sized MPV does not come with a 4-wheel drive system. Additionally, the Honda Odyssey 2024 has not undergone significant design changes compared to its previous version, and its safety equipment is inferior to its sibling, the Step WGN.
Due to the production taking place in China, the delivery time for the Honda Odyssey 2024 in Japan has been extended to 3-6 months. Moreover, as it is a newly launched vehicle, the Honda Odyssey 2024 currently does not have any special offers or significant discounts in the Japanese market. This could also be a contributing factor to the general indifference from domestic customers towards the car.
The Honda Odyssey 2024 for the Japanese market still belongs to the 5th generation that was introduced in 2013. In Japan, this car model is available in 3 versions: e:HEV Absolute, e:HEV Absolute EX, and e:HEV Absolute EX Black Edition.
Honda Odyssey e:HEV Absolute 2024
As the name suggests, the Honda Odyssey e:HEV Absolute EX Black Edition 2024 comes with various glossy black exterior details such as the front grille, horizontal front/rear garnish, center air intake, “L” shaped side air vents on the front bumper, mirror covers, dual 5-spoke alloy wheels, door handles, and taillight housing. Additionally, this MPV is equipped with LED headlights, LED positioning lights, sequential front fog lights, 18-inch wheels, LED taillights, and hands-free power sliding doors.

Inside the Honda Odyssey 2024, there is a spacious 3-row seating arrangement with heated leather seats, a 3-zone automatic air conditioning system, and a folding table for the second-row seats. The car is also equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen integrated with the Honda Connect infotainment system, electronic shift buttons, and wireless phone charging.

The “heart” of this MPV lies in its e:HEV hybrid drivetrain, which consists of a 2.0L i-VTEC gasoline engine and 1 electric motor. This combination produces a total output of 181 horsepower and a maximum torque of 315 Nm. The power is transmitted to the front wheels through an E-CVT gearbox.
Lastly, the Honda Odyssey 2024 comes with the Honda Sensing active safety package, which includes features such as short-range collision mitigation braking, automatic headlights, and cruise control.
As of now, the price of the Honda Odyssey 2024 in Japan ranges from 4,800,400 to 5,164,500 yen (approximately 806 to 867 million VND). While this MPV used to be sold in Vietnam, it has been discontinued since 2021.
