Mazda and Toyota have recently joined forces to develop automotive software and hardware in response to the challenging economic climate.
In today’s technological age, the entertainment and control systems of vehicles play a crucial role. However, the development and enhancement of these software systems come at a significant cost, amounting to approximately $2 billion per year.
While this cost may not be an issue for a major automaker like Toyota, it poses a considerable challenge for Mazda. Therefore, Mazda has decided to leverage Toyota’s software and hardware to achieve substantial cost savings, reducing development costs by 70% to 80%.
In the immediate future, the two companies will collaborate in areas such as control systems, infotainment systems, digital instrument clusters, electronic control units (ECUs), and wiring harness systems. Starting from 2027, Mazda’s upcoming electric vehicles will bear a 90% resemblance to Toyota vehicles.
This is not the first time that Toyota and Mazda have joined forces. They have previously formed partnerships and collectively developed various technologies, including shared powertrains and electrification. With this recent announcement, it is evident that Mazda’s future electric models will share many characteristics with Toyota’s models.
