BYD’s luxury car subsidiary, Yangwang, specializes in the production of luxury electric cars. The brand logo is a Chinese character meaning “lightning” or “electricity”. They have introduced the “e4” technology platform, which features BYD’s exclusive Individual Wheel Drive (IWD) technology.
Yangwang’s products are known for their modern design, fully equipped interiors, and advanced technology, setting a new benchmark in the Chinese and global automotive industry. The U8 is an SUV with unique features, while the U9 is a dynamic electric supercar. Let’s explore and review the U9 below.
Exterior design
The Yangwang U9 is designed with the concept of a “time and space portal”. The shape of the headlights is inspired by outer space, while the front face is strong and built to withstand impacts while maintaining optimal aerodynamics.
The large LED headlights have a distinct C-shaped design, reminiscent of recent models from Toyota such as the Crown or bZ3. The front air intake of the U9 is divided into three sections and features large-size air intakes, similar to luxury supercars.
The car’s body structure follows the classic ratio of fuel-powered cars, with a low and dynamic posture. The gullwing doors add a luxurious and eye-catching touch.
To complement the exterior, the Yangwang U9 is equipped with 21-inch wheels with 10 interwoven spokes, featuring a contrasting black and silver finish.
At the rear, the large electrically adjustable air intakes and the dynamic diffuser design showcase the impressive performance of the car. These details are made of carbon fiber, adding both aesthetic value and weight reduction.
In an interesting design touch, the Yangwang U9 is equipped with an engine compartment cover like gasoline-powered supercars, adding to its overall appeal. The LED taillights extend all the way to the rear, combining technology and charisma. Overall, the design of the Yangwang U9 is modern and befits its position as a top electric supercar from China.
Interior
The interior of the Yangwang U9 has received contrasting comments. Some find it less luxurious compared to other BYD models and question whether it matches the car’s design. However, it’s important to note that a supercar doesn’t need an overly elaborate cockpit. Instead, it focuses on design, performance, and the engine, the key factors for a supercar.
A quick overview reveals that the Yangwang U9’s interior is wrapped in leather, from the dashboard, center console, ceiling, to the seats. Carbon fiber details are also present. The car has two seats with a center console reminiscent of the Porsche 918 Spyder introduced a decade ago. The console houses a vertical screen, multiple buttons, and a storage space beneath for personal items.
In between the two seats, there is a wireless phone charging area. The driver and passenger each have their own floating screens, although the design is somewhat minimalistic compared to the price and the supercar brand. The door panel on both sides features various buttons for seat adjustment, mirror folding, door locking, window control, and more.
Powertrain
The Yangwang U9 is powered by four electric motors, producing a maximum total power of 1,100 horsepower and a maximum torque of 1,280 Nm.
With this powertrain, the Yangwang U9 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2 seconds and has a range of 700 km on a full charge. The U9 also features a 4-wheel electronic drive system with advanced torque distribution functions.
The U9 boasts various technological marvels, including 360-degree rotation, which allows the car to rotate with the press of a button instead of requiring traditional forward or reverse maneuvers. Additionally, the U9 can jump and even run on three wheels, thanks to its special suspension system called Disus-X.
