Suzuki doesn’t appear to have a strong interest in developing electric vehicles, instead focusing on establishing itself as a major car brand in the Indian market with its affordable car lineup.
However, the times are changing and India is now looking to promote the sales of electric cars. As a result, the Japanese automaker is once again entering the competition, investing a considerable amount of money to upgrade its production factory and develop a dedicated electric platform.
In the past, Suzuki attempted to convert its gasoline vehicles into electric cars and conducted tests on the Wagon R EV model. However, due to the high cost involved, Suzuki decided to abandon this plan.
Currently, the company is focusing on developing a dedicated electric platform called K-EV, specifically designed for small and affordable electric cars.
In addition, Suzuki is collaborating with Toyota to develop another platform for a mid-size electric SUV called the eVX, expected to begin production this year.
Having two platform options in different segments will allow Suzuki to diversify its product lineup and cater to the diverse needs of customers.
Recently, the Japanese automaker has been conducting research and collaborating with Denso and Toshiba to produce its own electric batteries. In the meantime, the Suzuki eVX model will utilize batteries from BYD.
According to the plan, Suzuki aims to launch a minimum of 6 electric car models throughout this decade, covering hatchback, MPV, and SUV segments.
