Despite receiving criticism for its controversial design language and a more complex iDrive system, BMW has achieved positive growth in 2023. Specifically, the Germany-based automaker ended the year with a cumulative sales figure of 2,253,835 vehicles, ranking at the top among luxury car manufacturers worldwide. This marks the third consecutive year that BMW has secured its position as the leading brand in the global luxury car market.
According to Automotive News Europe, BMW’s global sales increased by 7.3% compared to 2022. Furthermore, the 2023 sales result represents a new record for the Bavarian automaker.
Notably, BMW’s electric car models experienced tremendous growth, with a staggering 92% increase, accumulating a total of 330,956 electric vehicles sold worldwide. BMW anticipates further growth in the demand for its electric vehicles and aims to deliver half a million electric cars to customers worldwide this year.
If combined with the sales figures of its subsidiaries Rolls-Royce and Mini, the BMW Group achieved a total sales figure of 2,555,341 vehicles in 2023, representing a 6.5% growth compared to 2022.
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz recorded sales of 2,043,800 vehicles in the previous year, trailing behind BMW by a significant margin. The lower sales figure can be attributed to a shortage of components for Mercedes-Benz’s 48V mild hybrid powertrain. Additionally, the supply of essential components for the popular Mercedes-Benz E-Class faced challenges throughout the year.
Even in terms of electric vehicle sales, Mercedes-Benz falls short of BMW, with 222,600 electric vehicles sold, representing a 73% growth compared to 2022. However, Mercedes-Benz experienced strong growth in the higher-end vehicle segments, such as Maybach, G-Class, and AMG.
If we consider the van and Smart car sales figures, the Mercedes-Benz Group achieved a total sales figure of 2,491,600 vehicles in 2023, a modest 1.5% growth compared to 2022. Among them, Mercedes-Benz vans contributed 447,800 units, reflecting an 8% growth rate.
In 2023, Audi, another representative of the German automotive industry, secured the third position in the global luxury car market. Audi sold 1,895,240 vehicles worldwide, marking a 17% growth following a slight improvement in component availability. Electric vehicles accounted for 178,000 units within Audi’s sales figures, representing a 51% growth rate.
Tesla ranked fourth with a 38% growth in sales, reaching 1,808,581 vehicles. The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y duo contributed to 96% of the total sales. According to JATO Dynamics and Car Industry Analysis, the Tesla Model Y was among the best-selling models globally in 2023, with an estimated sales figure of 1.23 million units.
Following Tesla, the Lexus brand of the Toyota Group achieved a cumulative sales figure of 824,258 vehicles as of November 2023, representing a 32% growth. While Lexus experienced a higher growth rate than its competitors, its sales figure remains relatively modest compared to the aforementioned brands.
Volvo secured the sixth position with a total sales figure of 708,116 vehicles, representing a 15% growth.
