BYD’s factory in Indonesia will be built this year with an estimated capacity of around 150,000 vehicles per year.
Earlier this year, BYD revealed plans to build another electric vehicle production facility in Southeast Asia, alongside its existing plant in Thailand. The three countries targeted by the Chinese automaker are Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
According to information from Auto Industriya magazine, Indonesia is the chosen location for BYD to build its new factory. The information was released at the launch event of Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal in this country.
BYD stated that the Indonesian factory will have a total investment of $1.3 billion with an expected capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year. The construction process will begin this year. This will be BYD’s fifth factory outside of China, in addition to its factories in Thailand, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Hungary.
Recently, Indonesia has been accelerating the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem. Before BYD, Hyundai also decided to establish an electric car production line in this Southeast Asian country. Additionally, Tesla is also considering setting up a factory here.
In 2023, BYD achieved a record sales volume of 1.57 million pure electric vehicles and 1.4 million plug-in hybrid vehicles. This achievement made BYD the world’s second best-selling electric vehicle brand, second only to Tesla (1.8 million pure electric vehicles). In addition, the company is also among the top 10 largest automakers in the world.
In 2024, BYD aims to expand its vehicle distribution in markets outside of China. This is why the company, based in Shenzhen, has been aggressively building factories overseas. Furthermore, BYD has also started investing in safety features and autonomous driving technology to increase its technological autonomy.
