When an electric vehicle catches fire, using a fire blanket instead of traditional methods such as water or fire extinguishers is an effective way to control the flames.
The nature of electric vehicle batteries involves complex chemicals, making them difficult to extinguish with conventional methods like water or fire extinguishers. Not to mention, they have the ability to reignite even after the flames are controlled. This has posed new challenges for firefighting units worldwide. One innovative method for extinguishing electric vehicle fires that has recently been demonstrated to be effective by the South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) in Colorado is the use of a “fire blanket.”
In a video shared on social media, the South Metro Fire Rescue team (SMFR) stated that they received a call on January 10th reporting a red Jaguar I-Pace that had caught fire while charging in a garage.
Fortunately, everyone inside the house managed to escape, and the firefighting team began the process of evacuating vehicles from the garage for better access and to prevent the fire from spreading.
After successfully extinguishing the flames, the firefighters discovered that the battery of the Jaguar was still smoldering. This presented a challenge for the firefighting team, as the fire originated from a lithium-ion battery that is difficult to completely extinguish due to the chemical constituents in the battery that can sustain combustion. The team decided to use a fire blanket. The blanket, weighing up to 28 kg, was tasked with preventing the oxygen supply from reaching the battery.
The fire blanket proved to be highly effective in completely controlling the fire. However, the firefighting team still took precautions by covering the vehicle with the blanket and transporting it to a salvage yard.
According to SMFR, fire blankets are not cheap, ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 USD (equivalent to 74 – 122 million VND). However, they are more effective than simply spraying water on the vehicle. Additionally, using water to extinguish electric vehicle fires can have significant environmental impacts.
