The Mazda6, one of Mazda’s iconic sedans, will officially be discontinued from April 2024.

On January 19, 2024, Mazda announced the discontinuation of the Mazda6 in the Japanese market from April 2024. Prior to that, this mid-size sedan had also been discontinued in North America in 2021 and in the UK last year.

The manufacturer did not provide specific reasons for the discontinuation of the Mazda6. However, the poor sales performance of this mid-size sedan is believed to be the main reason behind the decision.

The Mazda6, initially introduced in May 2002 under the name Atenza, is a mid-size car that represents the “Zoom-Zoom” design philosophy of the Japanese automaker. The current Mazda6 model belongs to the third generation and was launched in 2012.

Kazuyoshi Todo, Sales Director of Mazda Japan, commented: “Atenza and Mazda6 have been beloved by many customers, with cumulative sales reaching 226,437 units in Japan.” Todo added, “The new crossover models will replace the Mazda6, and we will continue to provide customers with exciting driving experiences that are suitable for the modern era.”

The discontinuation of the Mazda6 demonstrates the declining popularity of sedans compared to SUVs and crossovers. High-riding vehicles dominate the automotive industry, enjoy consumer favor, and generate higher profits for car manufacturers due to their higher price points.

Although the Mazda6 production line will be shut down in April, customers can still place orders for this sedan until supplies run out. The company has not announced a direct replacement for the Mazda6, but some sources suggest that Mazda is developing a rear-wheel drive sedan using the platform of its larger SUV models.
