What is Omoda brand?

Omoda is a sub-brand of Chery, first launched at the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show. Omoda aims to create high-quality, youth-oriented and modern cars, suitable for young customers who are tech-savvy. Omoda is also Chery’s global brand, with ambitions to enter markets outside of China such as Southeast Asia, South America, South Africa, Australia, and Russia. The launch of Omoda in the Russian market was quite successful, with the brand ranking 8th in terms of sales in Russia in the first quarter of 2023.

The first model of the brand is the Omoda 5 – a B-segment SUV, which is the subject of this article, set to be sold in Vietnam this year under the name C5. Initially, Omoda C5 models will be imported from Indonesia to Vietnam, and then they will be assembled after Chery completes its factory in Vietnam, with the cooperation of Geleximco.

Omoda C5 Design: Modern Exterior, Smooth Interior

Omoda C5 has an attractive design from the front, thanks to the wide trapezoidal grille that extends across the front, seamlessly connected to the modern LED daytime running lights.

The two-tier headlights and the dual-side air vent on both sides are sporty and youthful. This design is eye-catching and appealing, but it may quickly go out of fashion.

The side of the car impresses with the long extended body lines that create a sense of motion. The sloping roof design resembles coupe models, with narrow windows and a combination of red and black accents on a white background in many details that emphasize the sportiness of this model.

From the rear, the full LED taillights form a horizontal arrow shape, the rectangular dual exhaust pipes, the two-tone rear wing combined with the brake lights complete the overall sporty and youthful look of the car.

In the interior, the highlight is the infotainment system and the instrument cluster of the C5 which are combined into a single screen that stretches across the dashboard. The software and interface of these systems are similar to Chery models and also similar to some previously launched Chinese models.

The interior represents a step towards a premium feel, with mainly soft-touch materials, comfortable seats. The front seats are inspired by racing seats, providing a snug and comfortable feeling. The rear seats are also impressive in terms of comfort, however, the headroom for rear passengers is somewhat limited due to the sloping roof design.

The driver’s seat can be adjusted in terms of height and position, while the front passenger seat can only be moved forward/backward through an electric switch, without height adjustment. One unique feature is the seats with air ventilation for cooling in the summer, which is quite a premium feature compared to other models in the segment.

The car has a dual-zone automatic air conditioning system with rear air vents. It even has a cooling box in the armrest, which is a very interesting feature. A sunroof is available on the top variant, adding to the premium feel of the Omoda C5.

The luggage capacity is announced to be 380 liters, slightly smaller than its competitors.

What engine does Omoda C5 have?

Omoda C5 is equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol engine derived from the Tiggo 4 Pro, but with slightly higher output (thanks to software adjustments). As a result, the engine produces 115 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque, a slight increase of 7 kW and 20 Nm respectively. The car uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with simulated 9-speeds, and the claimed fuel efficiency is 6.9 L/100 km, however, the actual figure will be higher.

With 4 people in the car, the Omoda C5 can easily accelerate and run at speeds of 80 – 100 km/h (common speeds on highways) without any difficulties. However, the acceleration when performing overtaking maneuvers may be slower.

What features does Omoda C5 have?

Spacious phone storage for two large phones, wireless charging, and two 10.25-inch digital screens are the first highlights when looking at the C5’s cabin. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are both wireless, while USB-A and USB-C ports are placed below the floating passenger dashboard. Rear passengers share a USB-C port.

Similar to many recent models introduced by Chinese brands, Omoda highlights the Level 2 autonomous driving capability of the new model. During the limited test drive, we did not have the opportunity to fully evaluate this system, but it is said to have features such as blind-spot detection, lane-keeping assistance, and collision avoidance; lane change assistance, adaptive cruise control (ACC) with full speed range; driver-assist camera,…

The car also has other interesting features such as remote control, keyless start, automatic memory for features such as air conditioning, audio, and parking position.

How does Omoda C5 feel and handle?

Omoda was wise to equip the car with 18-inch alloy wheels along with higher-spec tires compared to most modern models. They make the driving quality smoother on rough surfaces and provide better impact absorption. The rear suspension system seems firmer than the front, making rear passengers feel slightly uncomfortable.

We did not have the opportunity to perform any high-speed cornering maneuvers, but in both Sport and Comfort driving modes, the multifunction steering wheel of the Omoda C5 provides a very realistic and comfortable feel and responsive steering. Based on initial impressions, this is one of the best steering wheels in its segment.

Summary

With the initial impression during the limited time, Omoda C5 is a modern, youthful car with rich equipment, providing a solid feel in the body and stable performance. Although the price has not been announced yet, with the significant equipment mentioned above, coupled with the recommended prices in other markets, the price of the Omoda C5 is likely to be not cheap. Along with the import from Indonesia, it is possible that the price of the highest variant will be around 700 million VND or slightly more.

Omoda hopes to compete on equal terms with Japanese and Korean brands through product quality and long-term commitment to the Vietnamese market. The Omoda C5 crossover model will compete with models such as the Mazda CX-30, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Creta. The company promises to invest heavily in distribution and establish factories in Vietnam through cooperation with Geleximco.
