This action is considered an effort to reduce congestion on the roads of the capital city of France before the Olympic Games.
According to Reuters, Parisians have voted in a referendum to triple parking fees for vehicles exceeding the prescribed weight limit. Specifically, the parking fee for cars weighing 1.6 tons or more will triple to 18 Euros (~473,000 VND) per hour in the first two hours.
This means that the 6-hour stay of a large car will cost a huge amount of 225 Euros (~5.9 million VND). While small cars only have to pay 75 Euros (~2 million VND).
About 54.5% of Parisians voted in favor of this regulation, while 45.5% opposed it. This new regulation is expected to take effect on September 1, 2024.
Therefore, vehicles exceeding the regulations will be charged a parking fee of 18 Euros (~473,000 VND) per hour in the center of Paris (from the city center to district 11), while in the suburban areas of the city (from district 12 to district 20) it is 12 Euros (~316,000 VND).
We cannot deny the benefits that this new regulation brings, but it will affect hybrid cars, electric cars, and sedans, even though they emit less and are less dangerous to pedestrians in the event of a collision. The new regulation will also apply to electric cars weighing 2 tons or more.
According to David Belliard – Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of transportation, this new parking fee is expected to affect 10% of the city’s vehicles and could increase the city’s annual budget by 35 million Euros.
