The year 2023 marks the first time the Mitsubishi Xpander holds the title of “sales champion” since entering the Vietnamese market, with nearly 20,000 units sold.
In 2023, the Vietnamese automobile market experienced a challenging year. Despite government support and businesses offering registration fee incentives and discount programs, the purchasing power decreased significantly compared to 2022.
According to sales reports from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) and Hyundai Thanh Cong Vietnam (HTV), most of the car models in the Top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023 did not reach sales figures of over 20,000 units. In contrast, there were 4 models that surpassed this milestone in 2022.
Based on VAMA’s report, the total sales volume until the end of December 2023 decreased by 25% compared to 2022. Passenger cars experienced a 27% decrease, commercial vehicles decreased by 16%, and specialized vehicles decreased by 56%.
As predicted, the Mitsubishi Xpander became the best-selling model in the entire market, with nearly 20,000 units sold. The Xpander’s reasonable price, along with the growing popularity of multi-purpose vehicles in Vietnam, contributed to its success.
Below is the list of the top 10 best-selling car models in Vietnam in 2023:
1. Mitsubishi Xpander: 19,740 units
For the first time since its introduction in the Vietnamese market, the Mitsubishi Xpander topped the list of best-selling car models. A total of 19,740 Mitsubishi Xpander vehicles were sold in Vietnam in 2023, with 2,809 units sold in December. Compared to 2022, the sales of Mitsubishi Xpander decreased by 2,243 units.
2. Hyundai Accent: 17,452 units
The Hyundai Accent secured the second position with 17,452 units sold. Although this number is significantly lower than the 22,645 units sold in 2022, it was still enough to outperform its competitor, Vios. In December alone, 2,752 Accent units were delivered to consumers in Vietnam.
3. Mazda CX-5: 16,808 units
Surprisingly, the Mazda CX-5 ranked third in the top 10 best-selling cars in 2023. Despite a slow start, a strategic price reduction towards the end of the year boosted the sales of the Mazda CX-5. In total, 16,808 Mazda CX-5 units were sold in the past year, an increase of 4,108 units compared to 2022. It is one of the three models that experienced a growth in sales this year (along with the KIA Sonet and Ford Everest).
4. Ford Ranger: 16,085 units
In 2023, a total of 16,085 Ford Ranger units were sold, placing this “king of pickup trucks” in the fourth position, one spot higher than in 2022. In December alone, the American automaker sold 1,912 units. The Ranger still dominates the pickup truck segment in Vietnam and its local assembly and introduction of a new generation contribute to its market position. The Ford Ranger is the only pickup truck model in the Top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023.
5. Toyota Vios: 13,521 units
The Toyota Vios experienced a disappointing year in 2023 as the Japanese car brand only introduced an updated version with minor changes in appearance and features. Consequently, the sales of this model reached 13,521 units, about 10,000 units less than in 2022, allowing the Mitsubishi Xpander to surpass it.
6. Kia Sonet: 11,366 units
The Kia Sonet successfully appealed to Vietnamese consumers with its attractive prices, youthful design, and various equipment and features. As a result, Kia sold a total of 11,366 Sonet units, an increase of nearly 2,000 units compared to 2022.
7. Hyundai Creta: 10,719 units
The Hyundai Creta maintained its appeal in the Vietnamese market after its comeback in 2022. Hyundai sold a total of 10,719 Creta units in 2023, about 1,400 units less than in 2022. Despite the volatile market conditions, the Creta secured a place among the Top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023.
8. Toyota Corolla Cross: 10,485 units
Similar to the Vios, the Toyota Corolla Cross experienced a decline in sales compared to 2022 due to the emergence of competing rivals and supply constraints. In 2023, Toyota sold only 10,485 Corolla Cross units, a decrease of nearly 11,000 units compared to 2022.
9. Ford Everest: 9,960 units
Despite its relatively high price, the Ford Everest attracted customers with appealing offers from dealerships, as well as its design and technology. Ford sold a total of 9,960 Everest units in 2023. This 7-seater SUV is the only representative of its segment in the Top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023.
10. Honda City: 9,894 units
An updated version of the Honda City contributed to its sales of 9,894 units in 2023. In addition to its design, technology, and stable performance, continuous price reductions from dealerships enhanced the attractiveness of the Honda City to consumers.
