JATO Dynamics – the world’s oldest car data collection company, has recently released a list of the best-selling car models of 2023.

The list shows that the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling global car model in 2023, with sales reaching 1.64 million units. Following this compact SUV model is the Tesla Model Y with sales of 1.23 million units.

However, this announcement has sparked mixed opinions. Some argue that the Tesla Model Y is actually the best-selling car in the world.

This is because the method used by Toyota to calculate vehicle sales is not convincing. According to the Japanese automaker, Corolla sales are calculated as the total sales of all configurations (SUV, sedan, hatchback) and localized versions based on the Corolla prototype. In total, 6 models are included in the Corolla’s total sales figure: Corolla, Corolla Cross, Auris, Wagon, Fielder, and GR Corolla.

If we use the same method as Toyota, Tesla could also combine the sales of the Model 3 and Model Y since these two cars share the same platform and differ only in exterior design. When calculated this way, the combined sales of the Model Y and Model 3 would reach 1.74 million units, significantly higher than the 1.64 million units of the Corolla.
