Toyota plans to expand its Land Cruiser lineup and establish this famous model as a separate brand by adding two new electric models that will soon be available. Previously hinted at by a pair of concept cars, the Japanese company is planning a small model for young customers and a larger model for those who prefer luxury.
The electric version, introduced as the Land Cruiser SE concept in 2023, will be larger and focused on comfort. This model will utilize advanced technology such as Toyota’s solid-state batteries, promising to be produced at a lower cost and with higher energy density than current batteries.
The combination of technology and luxury in this vehicle can make it an ideal product to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Land Cruiser brand in 2026. Two years later, a higher-performance battery may be introduced, potentially extending the operating range to 1,000 km per charge. Although not focused on off-roading like the J250 Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota ensures that the Land Cruiser SE provides “highly responsible handling” on rough roads.
Meanwhile, no specific timeframe has been proposed for the smaller model, although a concept version called the Compact Cruiser EV was showcased in 2021. The car is expected to have a similar size to the bZ4X but with a stronger focus on design and utility. This means the vehicle can compete with the upcoming Land Rover Defender and the small-sized G-Class from Mercedes, as both electric cars will combine compact dimensions with a solid appearance.
Like the bZ4X, the vehicle is expected to be based on the E-TNGA platform. Currently, this platform can provide a power output of up to 214 horsepower and has a 71.4 kWh battery pack that can enable a range of up to 417 km per charge.
Previous reports from Japan have indicated that besides the electric variant, there are potential plans for a gasoline-powered and hybrid version of this SUV. In any case, the main objective of this vehicle is to make the expanding Land Cruiser lineup more affordable and “within reach of many people worldwide,” according to the brand’s director.
