Toyota has announced that it will temporarily halt the delivery of certain models such as the Land Cruiser, Innova, Hilux… after discovering irregularities in engine power tests.
On January 29, Toyota announced that it is suspending the transportation of certain vehicle models after its internal investigation unit found irregularities in the certification testing of diesel engines coded 1GD and 2GD, which are produced by Toyota Industries.
The test results showed that the electronic control units (ECUs) used in the engine power output tests had different horsepower codes from the control units used in mass production engines. While this does not affect the actual operation of the vehicles, it has violated the prescribed strict monitoring procedures.
Toyota has announced that 10 vehicle models equipped with diesel engines are affected and sold globally, including 6 models sold in Japan. The list includes Toyota Hiace, Innova, Granace, Fortuner, Land Cruiser 300, and Land Cruiser Prado. Among them, the Land Cruiser Prado model has been discontinued since 2020.
In addition, there are models of other brands that are equipped with Toyota-manufactured engines such as Mazda Bongo, Hino Dyna, Hino Dutro, and Lexus LX 500d.
For the time being, Toyota has suspended operations at 6 assembly lines in 4 of its plants. The company has also announced a temporary suspension of vehicle distribution to dealerships.
During a recent press conference, Mr. Koichi Ito – CEO of Toyota Industries admitted responsibility for loosened management leading to the irregularities. He said, “We deeply apologize for this issue caused by Toyota Industries Corp. The reason for the problem lies within the structure of our company’s system.”
Japanese authorities have also intervened to investigate the issue. The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has requested Toyota to provide a clear explanation regarding the irregularities.
According to the announced list, Toyota’s officially sold models in Vietnam are not affected. Toyota Vietnam has not yet issued an official response regarding this incident.
