On January 29, 2024, Toyota Industries Corporation, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, announced some irregularities in the output power certification test for three Toyota engine models applied to certain countries. Yesterday, on January 31, 2024, Toyota Vietnam issued a statement regarding this matter.

In accordance with that, Toyota confirmed that this issue does not affect any vehicles produced and distributed by Toyota Vietnam in Vietnam. Toyota Vietnam stated that this issue is related to irregularities in the diesel engine certification process, but it does not affect the power, torque, or other related values of the drivetrain system. Furthermore, these irregularities do not affect the emissions quality or the safety of the vehicles. Therefore, Toyota Vietnam assures customers that they can use the vehicles distributed by the company with confidence.

As reported, a special investigation committee has investigated Toyota regarding certification regulations related to the emission performance of forklift and construction machinery engines. During the investigation, the committee found some irregularities in the certification test process of diesel engines developed by Toyota Industries.

Specifically, the special investigation committee discovered irregularities in the output power certification test process for the 1GD, 2GD, and F33A diesel engine models from Toyota. The electronic control units used in the output power certification test process are different from those used in the engine production process.

As a result, Toyota had to halt the production of a total of 10 vehicle models equipped with these three diesel engine types, including Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Innova, Toyota Hiace, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Land Cruiser 300, Lexus LX500D, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota Granace, Mazda Bongo Brawny, and Hino Dyna/Dutro.

According to Toyota Industries, they have sold around 84,000 affected diesel engines in the fiscal year up until March 31, 2023. Koji Sato, the CEO of Toyota, revealed that the company uses 36,000 affected engines per month globally, which means 432,000 affected engines per year. However, Toyota’s spokesperson could not immediately provide information on how many affected vehicles were sold in previous years.

In the press conference announcing the sales performance in 2023, Akio Toyoda, the Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, apologized and took ultimate responsibility for this wrongdoing. He felt ashamed of recent scandals involving two subsidiaries, Daihatsu and Toyota Industries. At the same time, he promised to lead a transformation in the future.
