Volvo is gearing up to transition to electrification and starting with electric crossover models like the EX30. While all eyes are on emissions-free vehicles, the Swedish automaker is also developing a secret project called the V551, which is believed to be an electric sedan that will replace the Volvo S90. A leaked image from the factory shows Volvo employees celebrating this significant milestone.

According to reports, the S90 replacement could be called the ES90. However, this may cause issues with Lexus, as they use the ES nickname, so we can expect a different name when the production model is unveiled. The ES90 has left the production line in China as a pre-production model, meaning it will be used for development and testing. This is said to be the first global vehicle model led by a group of engineers in Shanghai, where Volvo’s research and design center is located.

Being a model based on the same platform as the Volvo EX90 and the Polestar 3, the ES90 could offer similar drivetrain options. This includes a 111 kWh battery pack that allows for a range of nearly 500 km. But being a lighter vehicle, the sedan version may be able to travel even further on a single charge.

The Volvo EX90 has a dual-motor setup with a power output of up to 496 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque, delivering power to all four wheels. In terms of dimensions, the ES90 is believed to have a length of 4,978 mm, a width of 1,945 mm, and a height of 1,546 mm, with a wheelbase length estimated at 3,101 mm. The electric replacement version may be shorter than the previous S90 model, but the wheelbase length will be longer, resulting in a more spacious cabin with a smaller foot area.

With competitors BMW and Mercedes-Benz entering the mid-size electric vehicle segment with the i5 and EQE, it’s time for Volvo to expand its lineup of electric sedan models. Production of the Volvo ES90 is expected to begin in May 2024 in China.
