South Korean giant LG has partnered with French glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain Sekurit to produce transparent antennas. This equipment can be attached to windshields or sunroofs without significantly affecting visibility.
The new antenna technology is made like a transparent film with over 80 LG-held patents, including transparent electrode technology.
The film-like antennas promise to be a breakthrough in the automotive industry, especially in the era of increasing wireless connections and the rise of electric vehicles – a type of vehicle that requires high aerodynamic capabilities.
According to plans, this special technology will be showcased at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) starting January 9, 2024. It is still unclear which car models will be the first to integrate the film-like antenna technology, but it is likely to be electric models distributed by Saint-Gobain Sekurit.
Antennas appeared on cars in the 1930s, which was also the time when car radios were introduced. At that time, each manufacturer would have its own antenna placement instead of just on the roof like today.
