Information about BYD – the world’s second-largest electric car manufacturer – planning to sell cars in Vietnam starting from 2023 has been announced. The timeframe for when BYD cars are expected to be sold in Vietnam has now been revealed.

Accordingly, BYD will open an official dealership in Hanoi in early May 2024. In the initial stage, BYD will distribute 2 car models in Vietnam, but the identities have not been disclosed. It is known that these 2 car models will be sedan and SUV types.

BYD cars sold in Vietnam will be imported as whole units from China. In the future, BYD cars in Vietnam may be imported from factories in the Southeast Asian region to enjoy the 0% tax incentive. Currently, BYD is investing $504 million to build an automobile manufacturing plant in Thailand, which is expected to be operational from 2024. In addition, BYD also plans to build another plant in Indonesia.

The SUV model that BYD is preparing to sell in Vietnam is very likely to be the Atto 3 electric car. This model is currently being sold in many other Southeast Asian markets such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. In Thailand, the BYD Atto 3 is the best-selling electric car in 2023 with a cumulative sales of 19,241 units, accounting for 25.18% market share. This model has a price range of 1,099,900 – 1,199,000 Baht (approximately 747 – 815 million VND). If it is sold in Vietnam, the BYD Atto 3 will be a competitive rival to VinFast VF6.

Established in 2003, BYD is a Chinese car manufacturer backed by American billionaire Warren Buffett. In 2023, BYD is the largest electric car manufacturer in China and the world’s second-largest, only behind Tesla. Specifically, in the past year, BYD has sold a total of 1,574,822 electric cars worldwide.

BYD’s sales mainly come from the Chinese market. However, the Chinese car manufacturer is currently making efforts to expand to international markets such as Japan, Europe, and Asia. In Southeast Asia, BYD is already present in several markets such as Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia.

BYD’s presence will make the Vietnamese auto market in general, and the electric car segment in particular, more vibrant. This will be the next Chinese automobile brand to enter the Vietnamese market, following MG, Hongqi, Lynk&Co, Haval, and Haima.
