As of December 20, automaker Ford has issued a total of 54 recalls, affecting nearly 5.7 million vehicles in less than a year in the US. This is also the third year that the company has led the number of recalls in this market.
Compared to the second-ranked automaker Kia, the number of Ford vehicles recalled this year is almost double. However, compared to the previous year, the number of Ford vehicles and recall incidents has shown a promising decrease, approximately 30%. In 2022, the automaker issued a total of 68 recall announcements involving up to 8.5 million vehicles.
“We are still striving every day to bring customers quality and truly safe vehicles. Proactively recalling these models is also one of the measures to prevent and protect customers from potential incidents. As a result, our new generation models will be even more reliable, and customers will ultimately benefit,” a Ford representative shared with Motor1.

Several other automakers also made it to the top 10 most frequent recall manufacturers, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan with 29, 27, and 22 recalls respectively.
While Ford leads in terms of recall announcements this year, electric carmaker Tesla recently set a record for the largest recall campaign of the year due to a flaw in Autopilot, its driver assist system, affecting over 2 million vehicles. This number is equivalent to the total number of Tesla vehicles sold in the US market.
According to NHTSA, Tesla’s Autopilot system has not fully accomplished its mission. Therefore, Tesla needs to recall nearly all vehicles to update the assist system.
