Upgraded from the A-class crossover model Casper, Korean automaker Hyundai brings to Europe an electric car with a price starting from 20,000 euros (equivalent to 530 million VND). This model is aimed at consumers in the affordable price segment. The electric Casper will help Hyundai to confront the increasing wave of imports from China and the price reduction of Western manufacturers through affordable alternatives. The Casper is very compact, even smaller than the Venue model. This model may not be suitable for American tastes, but it will perform well in densely populated cities in Europe.
The electric version will be produced together with its gasoline-powered sibling at Hyundai’s Gwangju plant in South Korea. According to The Chosun Daily, the Casper Electric will use a lithium iron phosphate battery pack, powerful enough to provide a range of up to 460 km, which is not bad for a small electric car. The car will use BorgWarner’s integrated drive module for compact electric vehicles.
While the Hyundai-Kia K1 platform will be used on the gas-powered Casper, reports indicate that the Casper Electric will be based on the Hyundai-Kia SA platform used for the Kia Ray EV. The 1.0L 3-cylinder engine will still be used for the regular Casper, but this variant will not be sold in Europe.
With a length of 2,590 mm, Casper may even be too small for European tastes. A slightly longer prototype was discovered undergoing testing in Sweden, and is likely to be offered to attract European customers.
Chairman and CEO of Hyundai Europe, Michael Cole, said that Hyundai wants to keep its customers in the small minicar segment, with a new model that includes both categories. “I think this car will be suitable for electric powertrains.”
