According to Whichcar, a reputable car magazine in Australia, the Mazda CX-5 will undergo a comprehensive upgrade and be renamed CX-40.
The information about the CX-40 has been revealed to Whichcar by Mazda Australia CEO Vinesh Bhindi, although this leader did not share any additional information about the project. According to reports, Mazda has registered the exclusive CX-40 nameplate since July 2019.
The CX-5 was launched in 2012 and underwent a mid-cycle refresh in 2016. Therefore, the current generation of this crossover model has entered its 13th year, double the typical life cycle of mainstream vehicles. Despite maintaining strong sales in many markets, such as Vietnam, it cannot be denied that the Mazda CX-5 has shown signs of being outdated compared to other vehicles in the same segment, both in terms of design and technology. Therefore, the launch of a new generation of Mazda CX-5 or a replacement model is urgently needed if the Japanese automaker does not want this nameplate to be left far behind by its competitors.
Meanwhile, the original CX-5 name could be used for an electric SUV. Mazda North America CEO Tom Donnelly has previously hinted that an all-electric SUV with the same name as the current products will be launched in 2025.
According to Drive magazine, the new Mazda CX-40 may use a similar powertrain configuration to the current model, including a four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. However, it is not ruled out that this crossover model will be switched to rear-wheel drive, similar to the CX-60 to CX-90 lineup.
