In order to build a solid-state battery supply chain by 2030, China has established an alliance called China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP).

The alliance brings together many battery manufacturers such as CATL, FinDreams Battery (BYD), CALB, Svolt, EVE Energy, Gotion High-tech, Nio, BYD…

Some key government members also participate, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Council’s Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, and the National Energy Administration.

The CASIP alliance aims to develop and produce competitive solid-state batteries globally, with Chinese companies at the center of its strategy and direction, partly as a challenge to Japan and the West in the field of revolutionary energy storage technology for the electric vehicle market.

Solid-state batteries are the technology that almost all major car manufacturers worldwide are focusing on developing. With higher energy density, solid-state batteries have the ability to store about three times the energy of traditional lithium-ion batteries of the same weight. Therefore, it can be predicted that the brand leading in solid-state battery technology will also lead the future of the electric vehicle industry.

Not only China is pushing forward the development of solid-state batteries, but there are also promising news about solid-state battery technology outside of this country.

In late 2022, QuantumScape, a US company (backed by investors including Volkswagen Group), announced that they have produced a prototype solid-state battery. Volkswagen Group also announced in 2021 that they will use solid-state batteries by 2025, while Hyundai Motor and BMW have announced plans to mass-produce solid-state batteries by 2030.

Meanwhile, Toyota is also the company with the most patents related to solid-state battery technology. The company also promises to launch electric cars powered by solid-state batteries in the near future.

Therefore, it is still too early to say whether Chinese companies can surpass Japan, the United States, etc. to lead the trend and bring solid-state batteries to the market the soonest.
