According to a spokesperson for Porsche, the German automaker will officially stop distributing the compact sports SUV model, the Porsche Macan, in the European market in Q1 2024. The direct reason for this decision is that the vehicle does not meet the new cybersecurity standards in Europe.

Specifically, starting from July 2024, the electronic structure of new vehicles registered in Europe must comply with new security regulations to protect the vehicle from hackers. However, the new generation Macan was developed before the cybersecurity regulations were announced. The spokesperson for Porsche stated that the cost to upgrade this SUV model to meet the new standards is very expensive. Additionally, Porsche could face a 30,000 euro fine per vehicle if it fails to meet these standards.

“Implementing these regulations not only requires adjustments in the technical deployment process, such as at assembly control units, but also fundamentally changes the development process for this vehicle model. For example, the management system will need to be adjusted and certified to meet future cybersecurity requirements.”

Porsche will continue to assemble the Macan for markets outside of Europe at its Leipzig plant in Germany. According to the plan, the Macan with internal combustion engines will continue to be distributed for at least the next 2 years. In the first 9 months of 2023, the Macan was the best-selling model for Porsche with a total global sales of 68,354 units, surpassing the Cayenne with only 64,457 units and the Porsche 911 with 38,789 units.

In 2024, Porsche will introduce its first all-electric Macan model, which will be distributed in parallel with the internal combustion engine version during the transition phase. However, the launch time of this SUV model is still uncertain due to software issues within the Volkswagen Group.

Other models from the Volkswagen Group distributed in Europe are also affected by these cybersecurity rules, such as the Volkswagen e-Up compact car, the Transporter T6.1 van, and the Audi TT and Audi R8 sports cars.

In Vietnam, Porsche Macan is officially distributed with 4 standard versions (T, S, GTS) and starting prices of 3.35 billion, 3.57 billion, 4.4 billion, and 5.34 billion VND, respectively. Competitors in the same segment as this model include the Maserati Grecale, Range Rover Velar, Discovery Sport, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Lexus NX.
