In a statement issued on Thursday (February 29), US President Joe Biden instructed the US Department of Commerce to conduct an investigation into vehicles equipped with connectivity technology originating from China and other “concerning countries.”
President Biden said, “China is determined to dominate the future of the automobile market, including the use of unfair practices.” According to him, China is ready to flood US roads with advanced technology vehicles that could pose risks to national security.

“Connected vehicles from China can collect sensitive data about our citizens and infrastructure and send this data back to the People’s Republic of China. These vehicles can be accessed or disabled remotely,” Biden said.
Reuters reported that the Chinese Embassy in Washington criticized the White House for claiming that their car models pose a threat to Americans. However, Biden believes that China imposes restrictions on American automakers. So, he asked, “Why are connected vehicles from China allowed to operate in our country without safeguards?”
This is not the first time the US has imposed restrictions on Chinese companies due to national security concerns. Previously, they banned Chinese telecommunications companies from entering the market due to similar data usage concerns.

White House officials said it is too early to say what actions the US Department of Commerce may recommend regarding import or sale of vehicles produced by China. However, they said that the government has extensive legal authority and can have a “significant impact.”
The US has restricted the use of Chinese-made batteries for electric vehicles to qualify for electric vehicle tax credits. The country has also imposed high tariffs on Chinese car models.
The US Department of Commerce will seek public input over the next 60 days and then consider drafting regulations. The investigation will also examine details about vehicles assembled in the US, such as where their software comes from.
