At BYD’s launch event in Indonesia, Mr. Airlangga Hartarto – Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs – confirmed that BYD plans to invest $1.3 billion to build an automobile factory in Indonesia.

According to Car News China, BYD’s factory in the archipelago country will have a capacity of up to 150,000 cars per year. It is known that this is BYD’s fifth electric car factory outside of China, after those located in Thailand, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Hungary.

Indonesia has made great efforts in recent years to attract investment from electric car manufacturers through various measures.

The country’s Minister of Industry said that the Government is considering removing import duties and value-added tax for companies investing in electric car factories in Indonesia.

“We are optimistic that if passed, this policy will stimulate investment and increase the demand for electric vehicles in Indonesia,” he said.

In 2023, Indonesia’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources mentioned that the Government is implementing measures to encourage investment from electric car manufacturers, with expectations of attracting large companies such as Tesla and BYD.

Since July last year, Mr. Bahlil Lahadalia – Indonesia’s Minister of Investment – confirmed that electric car manufacturers, including BYD, Wuling Motors, and many other companies, will soon establish factories in Indonesia.

According to some sources, BYD is also planning to launch in the Vietnamese market this year. Many other Chinese brands are also planning to enter the Vietnamese automotive market, promising fierce competition in the near future.
