At the end of 2022, many people believe that the D-segment sedan will be able to reverse the flow as sales of these models show signs of slight growth. However, the sales results of this segment throughout 2023 prove that D-segment sedans still face many obstacles to return to their former glory.
Segment sales decline
Since the departure of the VinFast Lux A, this segment has gradually declined compared to other remaining groups in the market. The segment only sold 4,625 cars in 12 months of 2023, a decrease of nearly 40% compared to 2022. Compared to the sales of the small and cheap car group, which has already weakened, the sales results of D-segment sedans are not even half.

Looking at the Toyota Camry, the model has always dominated the D-segment with sales of 2,429 cars in 2023, a decrease of nearly 45.6% compared to 2022. On average, Camry only sold about 200 cars per month last year.
Purchasing power has decreased significantly, but it is still enough for the Toyota Camry to maintain the throne against its competitors since neither the Kia K5 nor the Mazda6 have shown any growth in the past year. In fact, despite the numerous promotional programs applied throughout the year, the sales of both models have not shown any growth.

Kia K5 finished with 115 cars sold in December, bringing the total sales for the year to 1,044 units. Thaco Vietnam also sold only 88 units of the Mazda6 in the last month of 2023, bringing the total number of cars sold in 2023 to 1,094 units.
The Honda Accord continues to be the slowest-selling model in the segment, having sold less than 60 cars in 2023. With sales of only 58 units in 12 months, the Honda Accord joins the list of slowest-selling cars in the market along with familiar names like the Toyota Alphard, Suzuki Ciaz,…
Many offers for customers
At the beginning of this year, the entire D-segment was given many offers by manufacturers and dealers to stimulate consumer demand. Specifically, the Toyota Camry is currently being offered a direct discount of VND 50 million for customers who place an order in January, along with body insurance and vehicle maintenance vouchers. However, the remaining stock is dwindling and there is now only one choice, which is the black color.
“Customers who buy a black Toyota Camry will receive a discount of VND 50 million, but the dealer only has 1-2 cars left, so if you have the intention, you should place an order early to enjoy the discount,” the employee added.
Kia K5 is also being offered by many dealers with discounts ranging from tens of millions to over one hundred million dong to accelerate the sale of remaining inventory. In particular, some K5 cars with 2022 VINs that are still available have been discounted by more than 100 million dong by many dealers.

Contacting a Kia dealer in Hanoi, an employee there also mentioned that there is only 1 white Kia K5 Luxury model with a 2022 VIN left in stock, and customers who place and pay early will receive a discount of 110 million dong, bringing the listed price of the D-segment sedan model down to 749 million dong.
“Not every dealer has K5 2022 VINs left, so if customers do not particularly care about the model year, they can place an order early to enjoy the discount,” the person revealed.
Honda Vietnam is also implementing a program to support 50% registration fee reduction for some sedan models, including the Accord. This means that after the discount is applied, the price of the D-segment sedan will be around 1.1-1.3 billion dong.
However, the Honda Accord is still struggling despite being highly rated for its design and performance capabilities, but it has few variants and selective customers. The high price, even with the discount applied, has further weakened the competitiveness of this D-segment sedan.
With the pressure from SUV or MPV segments, the market share of D-segment sedans is expected to further narrow this year. Especially, 2024 is also the time when many affordable SUV and MPV models flood the Vietnamese car market. The D-segment sedans will need more boosts from manufacturers to enhance their competitiveness in terms of price like the current situation.

Honda Accord: 40 Years of Automotive Excellence
Looking at the Vietnamese car market right now and humorously comparing it, we will see Camry as a well-behaved young girl, not outstanding in every aspect but easily becoming the choice of the “other half”. Teana, on the other hand, is like a dignified and tranquil woman, full of courage. Meanwhile, Mazda6 is like a hot girl, quickly attracting and captivating anyone’s gaze from the first encounter. As for Accord – with the elegance and experiences of a U30 lady, even though she is always praised by everyone, she hides something “difficult to deal with” in the minds of the majority.
