A significant number of Kia Carnival and Kia Sportage vehicles in the US are set to be recalled for inspection of their roof rack, which is believed to have the potential to detach while the vehicle is in motion.

According to Carscoops, many 2022-2024 Kia Carnival and 2023-2024 Kia Sportage vehicles in the US will be recalled due to the risk of accidents when traveling at high speeds.

Specifically, Kia is recalling 40,426 Sportage vehicles and 60,623 Carnival vehicles in the US market due to a manufacturing defect that may cause the roof panel trim to not be securely fixed.

Although the roof trim detail is completely unrelated to the vehicle’s safety performance, the part’s potential to fall off at high speeds is believed to pose a danger to those on the road.

According to Carscoops, Kia became aware of this issue in September of last year, but the investigation process did not go smoothly. Most of the affected vehicles’ detached trim pieces could not be recovered, causing difficulties for the Korean automaker’s investigation process.

However, Kia stated that it has received numerous reports from vehicle owners, prompting the Korean automaker to conduct a thorough investigation. For investigative purposes, Kia intentionally improperly installed the roof panel trim and conducted tests, discovering that the trim could come off when the vehicle is traveling at approximately 145 km/h.

Kia determined that excessive interference with the retaining clips due to the use of too much adhesive or inaccurate assembly processes could cause the roof trim pieces to detach. Therefore, the Korean automaker decided to initiate a recall campaign.

Kia stated that it will begin contacting affected vehicle owners on March 15 and request them to bring their vehicles to authorized dealerships for inspection. For owners who have been affected but have proactively repaired their vehicles prior to the recall campaign, Kia will provide refunds.
