According to Motor1, preliminary data from JATO Dynamics and industry analysis show that the Tesla Model Y has become the best-selling car in the world in 2023. At the moment, many markets around the world have not released sales data for the entire previous year, and the final results will only be available in the second quarter of 2024.

Currently, Motor1 has access to accurate sales data in the US, Canada, most of Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand, major Latin American markets, many Southeast Asian markets, Russia, Turkey, and Israel. In addition, Motor1 also uses estimated data from the Middle East, North Africa, Japan, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and some other smaller regions.

The above figures show that the sales volume of the Tesla Model Y reached 1.23 million units in 2023, an increase of 64% compared to the same period last year. In 2022, the sales volume of the Model Y had already achieved a growth rate of 91%.

In China, the Model Y recorded sales of over 456,000 units, an increase of 45%. Meanwhile, in Europe, the Model Y surpassed many competitors such as the Dacia Sandero, Peugeot 208, and Volkswagen T-Roc to achieve sales of over 255,000 units, creating a gap of more than 19,000 units compared to the second-ranked vehicle.

According to Motor1’s forecast, the Model Y is likely to account for about two-thirds of the total number of vehicles delivered by Tesla to customers in 2023.

The achievement of the Model Y in leading the overall market is even more impressive as it directly surpasses the top two best-selling Toyota models, the RAV4 and Corolla. Previously, the Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Corolla were the names that regularly topped the global sales statistics.

Motor1 attributes the victory of the Model Y to the strong global trend of electrification. Toyota itself seems less enthusiastic about the shift to electric vehicles and instead focuses on the development of hybrid engines and introduces them to customers.

Although Toyota’s sales figures remain relatively stable thanks to its hybrid strategy, the absence of pure electric products is believed to have affected the company’s business activities in markets such as China and Europe.

Although ranking second after the Tesla Model Y, the sales volume of the Toyota RAV4 in the previous year was also impressive, with over 1.07 million units sold worldwide. The Toyota Corolla recorded sales of 1.01 million units, ranking third in the list of the world’s best-selling cars in 2023.
