A Chinese automaker recently introduced the Chery Omoda E5 model to the Malaysian market, with a starting price of 146,800 RM (equivalent to about 732 million VND). The first batch of cars delivered to customers will be fully imported from the Chinese market, and then Chery will switch to assembly in this Southeast Asian country from the second quarter of 2024.

This model is sold with only one variant and one drivetrain, using a single-axle drive with an electric motor mounted on the front axle, producing 150 kW (203 horsepower) and 340 Nm of torque, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. The top speed is 172 km/h.

The car’s battery is a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) type, with a maximum operating range of 430 km according to the WLTP standard. When using the 80 kW DC fast charger, the battery level increases from 30% to 80% in just 28 minutes. In addition, customers can still use the 9.9 kW AC charger.

In terms of appearance, the Chery Omoda E5 and the gasoline-powered Omoda 5 have a similar appearance, except for the front of the car. The 3D grille on the gasoline-powered version is replaced with a completely flat surface to improve aerodynamics for the electric version.

Like the gasoline-powered Omoda 5, the Omoda E5 is an electric SUV in the B-segment with a length of 4,420 mm, width of 1,830 mm and a wheelbase of 2,630 mm. Compared to the BYD Atto, these dimensions are lower by 35, 45, and 90 mm, respectively. The ground clearance of the car is 145 mm and the trunk volume is 483 liters.

In terms of equipment, the Omoda E5 uses LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, electrically adjustable sunroof, power-operated tailgate, welcome lights, leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning (with PM 2.5 air filter and rear seat vents), interior ambient lighting. The car’s 8-speaker audio system comes from the Sony brand.

The interior of the car stands out with a dual-screen 2K display that extends from the center control panel to the back of the steering wheel, with a size of 24.6 inches. The infotainment system comes with Qualcomm 8155 chip, compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition, the control panel has a 50W wireless charger for smartphones.

The driver assistance technology includes some features such as a 360-degree camera, automatic headlights, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, emergency automatic braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a tire pressure monitoring system. This safety package is called ADAS 2.5.

According to various sources, the Chery Omoda E5 will be available in Vietnam in the third quarter of this year. This model will directly compete with the VinFast e34 in the electric vehicle segment. The selling price may be higher if imported from China, but Chery has partnered with Geleximco conglomerate to build a car manufacturing plant worth 19,000 billion in Thai Binh province.
