Chinese car company Zhidou, known for its affordable electric vehicles, reveals new competitor against Wuling Hongguang Mini EV in Vietnam.

Chinese automaker Zhidou made a surprise appearance at the Autotech & Accessories Exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City in May 2023.

At this exhibition, Zhidou showcased and introduced its small electric car model called A01, which promised to be sold in Vietnam in the next 3 months with a price of just over 100 million VND. However, almost a year has passed and there is no further news about this project.

Meanwhile, in the domestic market, Zhidou has just released images of the exterior and interior of its new model, which they named Rainbow, a cute name because it is associated with rainbows.

Zhidou Rainbow offers seven colors to choose from, but it’s quite disappointing, especially after seeing the promotional images, as these colors don’t seem to represent the seven colors of the rainbow.

Instead, the car will follow the same approach as Wuling Hongguang Mini EV Macaron, its main competitor, and will offer macaron-inspired colors including pink, peach, mint, and sand. Thanks to the newly released images, we now have an idea of how the interior looks.

Unlike Changan Lumin, the small electric car Zhidou Rainbow closely follows the micro EV formula popularized by Wuling for the first time. The overall design is quite cute and it’s a four-door four-seater car.

The Y-shaped headlights at the front and rear make the Zhidou Rainbow car stand out from its competitors. The interesting thing is that the two-tone paint extends from the roof to the A-pillar, but both the B-pillar and the C-pillar are painted black. The rear trunk opens relatively wide and has a large rear window.

Now we have some ideas of how the interior of the new car looks. The dashboard of the Zhidou Rainbow electric car appears to be more technologically advanced than some of its competitors, featuring an LCD screen above the steering wheel and a floating touch screen.

Below the central screen, there seems to be some dials that are said to control the climate. There is a central compartment similar to the Mini EV that comes complete with a dial selector. The interior color is evaluated from pink and white in the images, and then the exterior color is chosen.

The measurements of the Zhidou Rainbow car include the length, width, and height of 3224/1515/1630 mm, and a wheelbase length of 2100 mm. This car is slightly larger than the Wuling or Geely Panda Mini EV, so it’s clear that space will be one of the attractions of the Rainbow car.

Currently, there are no images of the car’s luggage compartment. In the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, there is basically no luggage compartment unless you fold down one of the rear seats. Up to now, it is difficult to determine the situation of the Zhidou Rainbow car based on the images released. However, we can see that there is a cargo grid on both sides of the rear and the seats can be folded down.

Zhidou Rainbow will be launched next month. The 20 kW electric motor version has a 17.18 kW battery for a driving range of 201 km. For the 30 kW electric motor version, the driving range is 205 km thanks to a slightly larger 17.3 kWh battery.

Zhidou used to be one of the leading electric vehicle manufacturers in China, but after facing financial difficulties, the company stopped producing cars. Recently, the company has been partially rescued by Geely, and Rainbow is the comeback model.
