Audi to optimize the naming of its product line

Seven years after its introduction in 2017, Audi has finally done away with the vague naming structure, consisting of two digits representing different power outputs of the cars.

The change in product lineup and official naming begins with the recently launched Audi Q6 e-tron model. The previous naming structure – starting with the base number “30” for cars with a minimum power of 109 horsepower and ending at “70”, followed by the type of engine (TFSI or TDI) – will no longer be found on the rear badges of Audi vehicles.

Florian Hauser, Audi’s Director, stated: “When we talk about simplicity, we don’t just mean options and configuration processes – we’re really thinking about having the most streamlined powertrain lineup for the Q6, which still meets customers’ needs.” about Sales & Product Marketing for Electric Vehicles in an interview with Auto Express.

The new naming focuses on one or two variants of the drivetrain system, the number of driven axles, and the battery size. The naming will start with Q6 e-tron, although technically, the latest Q8 e-tron lineup has also been simplified, however, the previous naming still remains in the literature and pricing at the current time.

The all-new Q6 e-tron is only available in two power outputs, represented by Q6 and SQ6, with the SQ6 being the more powerful version with 510 horsepower (activated launch control). The 4-wheel drive models will feature the quattro badge, while the battery size in the future may be denoted by the presence of a suffix.

Hauser commented: “For smaller and larger batteries, we can think of a suffix behind the number ‘6’ – for example: ‘Performance’. And so, we don’t need the numbers anymore so they won’t be displayed.”

According to Audi, even the gasoline-powered cars will eventually have the two-digit names phased out, at least on the badges on the rear.
