In 2023, the Vietnam Auction Joint Stock Company (VPA) implemented an auction program for a series of license plates to meet the demand of many car owners. License plates with consecutive numbers or repeated digits are often preferred by many car owners because, according to folklore, these are beautiful number series that represent luck.
In many consecutive auctions throughout 2023, license plates with the “dragon horn” series, meaning license plates with the “56789” number series, were sought after with record-high prices.
Starting from September 15, 2023, the first “dragon horn” license plate, 30K-56789, belonging to Hanoi, was put up for sale and recorded a record-breaking price of over 13 billion VND. According to regulations, auction participants must deposit 40 million VND and pay a 100,000 VND registration fee before each auction session. After successfully winning the auction, the winner must pay the money and complete the procedures within 15 days.

However, the winner of the first auction did not fulfill the financial obligation, so this license plate was put up for sale again on November 28, 203.
In the second auction, the license plate 30K-56789 was sold for a price exceeding 16.5 billion VND. However, this license plate was again abandoned and had to wait until the final auction in early December 2023 for the highest-priced “dragon horn” license plate in Vietnam to be successfully paid at a price of 12.57 billion VND.
The remaining “dragon horn” license plate in Hanoi, 29D-56789, was also put up for sale on September 28, 2023. However, compared to license plate 30K-56789, this license plate had a much lower price of only 170 million VND. This is also the cheapest license plate with the “56789” number series in the auction sessions.

The license plate 19A-56789 participated in the auction in December and was successfully sold for more than 2 billion VND. This “progressive number” license plate belonging to Phu Tho province was quickly auctioned off on February 16, 2023, just a few minutes after the start of the auction.
In the same December 2023, the license plate 38A-56789 belonging to Ha Tinh province was also “sold” at a price of 1.6 billion VND. The license plate 61C-56789 is one of the last “dragon horn” license plates to be auctioned on December 20, 2023. After nearly 30 minutes, the license plate belonging to Binh Duong province officially sold for 705 million VND.
In addition to the “dragon horn” plates, many beautiful license plates with repeated digits like quadruples and quintuples were auctioned at record-breaking prices, including 88A-888.88 sold at 29.43 billion VND, 14A-888.88 (21.855 billion VND), 30K-666.66 (19.58 billion VND) or 30K-555.55 (14.495 billion VND).
