Audi R8 still alive and kicking

Introduced for the first time in 2006, the Audi R8 is the flagship sports car of the Ingolstadt, Germany-based carmaker. Produced in two generations, this model shares many technologies with the Lamborghini Gallardo and Huracan.

Notably, the Audi R8 is also associated with the Iron Man image in popular culture. Earlier in 2019, Audi announced that it would discontinue this model by the end of 2023 with the R8 GT RWD edition, which was introduced in October 2022.

With this information, car enthusiasts quickly sought to purchase this iconic sports car. In the United States, Audi R8 sales doubled, reaching 631 units in 2023 compared to 314 units in 2022. Audi has not yet announced the global sales figures for this model in 2023. Previously, global sales of the Audi R8 in 2021 and 2022 were 1,679 and 1,097 units respectively.

According to a statement shared with Bollinger Hofe, Audi revealed that the R8 is still being produced at the Bollinger Hofe factory. This is also where the Audi RS E-Tron GT pure electric sports car is manufactured. However, Audi’s R8 production line will only last until the end of March 2024.

Not stopping there, the Volkswagen Group will also discontinue the naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 engine of this supercar. This means that the next generation of the Lamborghini Huracan, which shares many technologies with the Audi R8, will also not be equipped with the characteristic V10 engine. It is highly likely that the future supercar model will be equipped with a V8 engine and hybrid technology.

Prior to this, Audi introduced the R8 e-tron electric version at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. With a price tag of over $1.1 million, the Audi R8 e-tron had sales of less than 100 units in its first year and was quickly discontinued. Information about the successor to the Audi R8 has not yet been released.
