Car owners spend more on replacing the battery of a BMW i3 than buying a new car

The BMW i3 battery pack consists of 8 cells, and whenever one of them shows signs of damage, the car owner has to face a hefty repair and replacement bill from the dealership.

A recent post on Reddit by user Xplorng77 mentioned that when bringing their 2015 BMW i3 for repair due to battery issues, the owner received a quote for a new battery pack replacement of up to 64,588 USD excluding taxes. This price is much higher than the cost of buying a new i3 in 2021.

In the US market, BMW applies an extended warranty program for i3 owners in certain states. Owners can have the drivetrain system covered for up to 10 years or until the car reaches 241,000 km. However, with the high cost of repairs and replacements, many owners choose to have their i3s serviced at third-party garages.

Below the comments section, multiple people mentioned that the aforementioned price includes the labor cost for replacing the entire battery pack consisting of 8 cells in the i3. Therefore, owners can choose to have their vehicles repaired at alternative repair shops and request the replacement of only one or a few cells to optimize costs.

The BMW i3 is an electric car model introduced by the German automaker in 2013. It plays a significant role in the company’s electric mobility strategy.

The BMW i3 is equipped with a 168 horsepower electric motor, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. The i3s variant, on the other hand, utilizes a more powerful electric motor with 181 horsepower, offering a 0-100 km/h acceleration time that is around 0.4 seconds faster than the standard i3.

Over time, the i3 has gradually become overshadowed by its competitors, and as of August 2022, BMW has officially discontinued the production of the i3 to make way for newer models with more modern design and higher power, such as the iX crossover, electric 3-Series, and flagship electric sedans i4 and i7.
