According to Motor1, despite the record high new car prices in the US, many models are still being sold by dealerships above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Data from iSeeCars shows that the MINI Cooper Hardtop with an internal combustion engine has a listed price of 29,858 USD in the American car market, but is actually being sold on average for 37,473 USD.
According to Motor1, the above mentioned price is applicable to the current generation of the MINI Cooper Hardtop, which has been on the market since 2014. Last year, the electric version of the MINI Cooper was introduced, and the gas-powered version will also be launched later this year. However, customers of this brand seem unwilling to wait and are willing to pay an additional 25.5% above the suggested retail price to own the MINI Cooper Hardtop with an internal combustion engine.
Two other MINI models, the Countryman and Clubman, also appear on the list of most overpriced vehicles in the US market. Specifically, customers have to pay 40,757 USD to own the MINI Countryman and 43,238 USD to buy the Clubman, which is a price difference of 18.7% compared to the listed price.
According to iSeeCars, the MINI electric model is also being priced up in the US, with an average actual cost of ownership of 36,434 USD, which is 17.8% higher than the listed price.

In the US market, the Porsche Taycan is the second most overpriced car model, following the MINI Cooper Hardtop. With an average actual selling price of 137,729 USD, the Porsche sedan is being sold 23.1% higher than the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of 111,893 USD.
Other Porsche models also appear on the list of overpriced vehicles in the US market, including the Macan, Cayenne, Taycan Sport Turismo, along with the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, with price differences of approximately 20% compared to the listed price.
In fact, iSeeCars’ report shows some positive signs as the average price difference of new cars in the US market is only 8.9%, lower than the 7.2% figure at this time last year. Moreover, electric models like the Hyundai Kona EV and the Volkswagen ID.4 are being sold below the listed price.
Karl Brauer, a senior analyst at iSeeCars, believes that supply is gradually catching up with market demand. This is a positive signal that suggests car prices in the market may continue to decrease in the near future.
“At some point, new car prices will return to a level similar to the pre-pandemic period. However, with the current situation, it will take at least a few years to achieve that,” stated Karl Brauer.
