Fang Cheng Bao, a sub-brand of BYD unveiled in June 2023, launched its first model, the Bao 5 (also known as the Leopard 5) in August 2023. In terms of dimensions, the BYD Bao 5 measures 4,890 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, 1,920 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. Built on the Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) Super Hybrid platform, the Bao 5 features a boxy design with rugged elements such as hefty bumpers and thick body cladding. At first glance, many would notice the resemblance of this Chinese SUV to the Toyota Land Cruiser.

Moving inside the cabin, the Bao 5 also embraces the off-road theme with the center console featuring rugged-looking knobs to control various functions of the vehicle such as the four-wheel drive system and the climate control. Despite focusing on the off-road theme, the Bao 5 is not short on screens, with a trio of them gracing the dashboard.

The driver gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, while the front passenger has a 12.3-inch touchscreen. In the middle is a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen that sits above the air conditioning vents and an air-cooled wireless charger. The triple-screen setup is standard on the higher-end variants sold in China, along with a head-up display.

In China, the Bao 5 5-seater SUV is offered in three variants: Discovery, Pilot, and Yunnian Flagship, with prices ranging from 289,900 to 352,800 yuan (approximately 1 billion to 1.2 billion VND).

All variants come with the same plug-in hybrid powertrain that produces a combined 677 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque. The powertrain consists of a 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine with 192 horsepower and 273 Nm of torque, coupled with two electric motors. The front electric motor produces 268 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque, while the rear motor delivers 382 horsepower and 400 Nm. Fang Cheng Bao claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.8 seconds.

The car is equipped with a 31.8 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which gives it a pure electric range of 125 km. When using a fast charger, the car can be charged from 30-80% in just 16 minutes.

The Bao 5 is currently only on display at BIMS 2024, and no official word has been given on whether this SUV will be sold in Thailand.
